An exerpt from the book: Alaska truly lives up to its billing as the Great Land, a landscape so vast and varied that it seems beyond the scale of human comprehension. Superimposed on a map of the lower 48, this largest of all states stretches from Jacksonville, Florida, to San Jose, California ... mountain ranges, forests, ice fields, tundra plains, lakes and rivers rolling off to an infinite horizon. Alaska's total coastline (including its thousands of islands) is enough to circle the globe one and a quarter times.
