Alice spends most of her young life in an idyllic environment, unaware of the ravages of the Revolutionary War going on in the rest of the country. Soon enough though, the fighting comes to her doorstep and she ends up playing a pivotal role in the defense of her small community. In the process she finds herself falling in love with an officer in the US Army, Fitzhugh Beverly. Beverly returns the sentiment and risks life and limb to ensure her safety and wellbeing, as well as that of her family. Many colorful characters make up the citizens of Vincennes and make this story an entertaining read. Loosely based on actual events.
