Picked this up because of a book club selection (and I'm a fan of Wilson's work on Ms. Marvel). I think I like her comics work better, but I thoroughly enjoyed the merging/analogous relationship between magic and technology!
My relationship with this book is problematic. On one hand, I love it for what it is. Finally, we have something that draws on Eastern and Islamic tradition. It’s great and wonderful. We need books like this.On the other hand, it is so predictable and some parts of the book just don’t work for me.So...
This story combines ancient mythology and the somewhat mystical world of the internet, and births a metaphysical work that is simultaneously tangibly graspable, and at the same time, vaguely mirage-like. In reading it, I found myself on the one hand, drawn into the plot, while simultaneously, marve...
I'm not really sure I can adequately wrap up how I feel about this book. That's in part to it just having been weeks since I finished it. I thought the time might help me get some clarity, but if anything it muddied the waters a bit. Alif the Unseen is about a hacktivist who finds himself unexpect...
DNF: Despite adoring the writer, I had serious issues enjoying this narrator. He was an immature jerk that I couldn't possibly root for... that does not a good novel make. :(
I've got to say that this is a very different book. I haven't read much books that revolved around jinns in "modern" society (but I've played Golden Sun ~kudos if you get this reference) so this concept was pretty unique to me. In my library I found this in the adult fiction section. I got the overa...
When Intisar tells Alif that she is to wed another regardless of their secret marriage contract his heart is broken. When she tells Alif that she never wants to see him again, his grief transforms his coding into a shield that is capable of identifying Intisar from mere words of text and hiding his...
I was looking forward to this read - but frankly, the genies were more convincing than the hacking. We actually got to see the genies being, well, fantastic creatures, while I found the description of the hacking ... unconvincing, and filled with purple prose. Also, there is a character in this n...
The end of the year, and I decided to finish with a bang, picking the most promising books lingering on my ToBeRead list. It’s been one interesting read after another, and if they weren’t all equally amazing, most have been thought-provoking and interesting. Alif came to my attention as a genre-bend...
I had been waiting a long time to read this one. So I was really excited to finally crack the spine yesterday. At first, I totally sank into it. I found myself completely immersed in the City and Alif's life. But as the story progressed, I found that all the elements that I'd really been excited abo...
