Well fuck me in a dog suit, this book turned out to be a fictionalized Laura Bush memoir. In all likelihood I probably wouldn't have read it had I done the smallest bit of research (aka reading a few reviews). As it turns out, it was a pretty good book, at least the first three quarters. Early on...

American Wife tells the story of Alice Lindgren, the bookish daughter of a small town middle class couple who, as a teen, is involved in a car accident which alters her life forever. Alice survives the accident with only minor physical injuries (not so for the other person involved) but emotionally ...

Mean-spirited and intrusive. Also, dragged on forever...especially the last section.

Like EVERY other reviewer, I felt the book really flag in the last quarter. I almost loved the first three parts and it was well on its way to a four-star rating. But, sigh, I didnt know what the fourth part was trying to say. Made me feel preached to and a little stupid.

This is a compelling, well-written story, but I abandoned it halfway through. Why? I grew suspicious the author was sneaking her political viewpoint into the narrative, and the reviews I read confirmed the politicizing would increase throughout the novel. I wanted no part of that.Alice Lindgren is a...
A Book Addict's Musings by Readinghearts
After having looked at this book several times over the last year or so, one of my GR groups finally decided to read it as a group read, which bumped it up on my list. The premise of the book, the story of a first lady's life, sounded interesting to me. And it really was, it was just not at all wh...
