Excellent first novel from Douglas Hulick. The story is written in first person with a single character as a point of view. The prose is concise—something I prefer in my fantasy novels—and manages to keep the descriptions of the surroundings/people to a minimum. Another thing I prefer. There are no ...

I reserve 5 stars for books that are perfect. This came damn close. Swashbuckling, adventure fantasy fun with a compelling, likeable hero, interesting magic, strongly written fight scenes, and more. Well worth your time if you're a fantasy fan. A great read. Highly recommended.

3.5 starsThis was a really fun read but there was so much going on. It felt a little overwhelming at times. There were so many side stories going on that it got a little confusing. However, everything fit together in the end. I wouldn't say it was a happy ending but it made sense.

I went in with lukewarm expectations; the ratings on Goodreads were good, but not consistently exceptional. Reviews tended to be positive, but they certainly weren't universal, and I hadn't hea...

Probably closer to a 3.5 (mostly because I didn't completely connect with the characters) but I'll balance that with a 4.5 for excellent sword fight scenes and nearly non-stop action and intrigue. Reminded me of watching the series 24 sort of mashed up with the mini-series Pillars of the Earth thro...

I really got hooked into this world...I think just the plot twists created plenty of action and there was enough of a mystery that I literally stayed in and up late on a Saturday to finish it.Drothe is a 'nose', or information gatherer, for a network among the city theives. When in the ordinary cour...
