Not my cup of tea, and rather a disappointment as I do like Nick Cave.
I'm a Cavewoman through and through, that said, I tend to prefer Nick Cave's lyrics to his books. And the Ass Saw the Angel is dark and gruesome, and sure to offend some readers, but as with Cave's Murder Ballads, there is a uneasy beauty within this dark and twisted tale.
It's sick, it's twisted and it's totally awesome. I was introduced to the book first when my sister (who was reading it at the time) read me the scene with the horse. Horrifying? Yes. Intriguing? Even more so. Though, it must be said, too, that it's not the easiest book to read out there...
