Born in Sheffield, England, to Irish immigrant parents, Andrew Crowe grew up in London, and did not find New Zealand until 1972. In 2009, he became the first non-fiction writer here to win the MARGARET MAHY MEDAL. Although this was for his contribution to children's literature, he specialises in multi-level books with many titles aimed more at an adult readership. His first book, "A Field Guide to the Native Edible Plants of New Zealand," is now in its 15th printing.
