I read a lot of Anne Rice in the 80s, both her Vampire Chronicles and her Mayfair Witches series. I always find her very readable and there is always some dark beauty in her prose. However, like most series the quality tend to drop off after three or four volumes, the authors either begin to repeat ...
This is, to date, my fave Anne Rice novel. It is that epic, and the movie sucks in comparison (the only thing about the movie I like is the music. And how cheesy the movie is, let's be honest. "Gothic" in the late 90's/early 2000's is nostalgic for me because that was my scene back in the day LOL).
Akasha is the queen who wakes. This one brings more depth to the vampire mythology. The queen isn't a good vampire, is she? How the vampires came to be is pretty fascinating.
I didn't like this one as much as Lestat (my favorite), I still loved getting to see the world through the different vampires. Still as decadent as its predecessors, this one also has some more stomach curning moments (a bit more gory than the others).
