Annette Debo is a professor of English at Western Carolina University in the mountains of North Carolina. She has written three books about the modernist writer H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) who was part of the modernist expatriate circles of the early twentieth century. Her monograph The American H.D. weaves together literary criticism, cultural history, and archival research to tell a new story about the significance of nation in H.D.'s artist vision and life. Most recently, she edited Within the Walls and What Do I Love?, short stories and poems written in London in the midst of World War II. Her extensive introduction offers a historical and biographical context, focusing on women's civilian experiences during the war. Her monograph The American H.D. weaves together literary criticism, cultural history, and archival research to tell a new story about the significance of nation in H.D.'s artist vision and life. Her articles have appeared in academic journals like African American Review, Callaloo, South Atlantic Review, Quarterly Review of Film and Video, and more. Currently, she's writing about the contemporary African American historical poem.
