Tony Newpower was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1967. Interested in the military from a young age, Tony attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and graduated with Merit in 1989 with B.S. in Computer Science. Following graduation, Tony reported to Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida to begin training as a nuclear engineer. Upon completion of his training, he was assigned to USS CHANDLER (DDG-996), based in San Diego, as Anti-submarine Warfare Officer and eventually Navigator. He then received orders to the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65), in overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding, as #3 Propulsion Plant Watch Officer for overhaul crew 'A'. Following this tour, Tony made the difficult decision to leave the Navy and to apply his Computer Science degree. He has worked in a number of software engineering roles, beginning with tracker software for the AIM-9X missile program and then moving into various telecommunications software roles with Nokia, Texas Instruments, Symbian Software, Ltd. and Qualcomm where he is currently a Senior Director of Engineering responsible for Microsoft device programs. Tony received his M.S. in Software Engineering from Southern Methodist University in 1998 and his M.A. in Military Studies (Naval Warfare) in 2008 from the American Military University. Iron Men and Tin Fish was his first book and the winner of the 2006 John Lyman Book Award for Science and Technology. Tony resides in the San Diego area with his wife, Christine, and their three children: Paul, Sarah and Grace.
