Reading list: Amazon Trail--in Books!
The most awesome (and most subtly educational) computer game from my childhood--now in books! The order follows the itinerary of the game, from your first stop, through Vilcabamba.
I was unable to find any books specifically about Belem, Brazil--your starting point. I also haven't included any books about the wildlife of the region--I do hope to add some later.
To read a "walkthrough" of the game, this is a great link: http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/581700-amazon-trail-3rd-edition-rainforest-adventures/faqs/29228
*This is based on Amazon Trail 3, not the original version. I haven't played the original, so I'm not sure how different the 3rd edition is.
