Reading list: Halloween Book Bingo - Mystery Square

Dorothy L. Sayers's "Strong Poison" (ISBN 13: 9780061043505; ISBN 10: 0061043508) -- the first of the "Lord Peter and Harriet Vane" mysteries -- has a fairly lengthy and crucial scene towards the end that involves spritualism, an ouija board, and the (presumed) communication with ghosts.

In terms of more recent mystery writing, you can hardly get any more Halloween'ish than with Ian Rankin's "The Falls" (ISBN 13: 9780312982409; 0312982402), whose plot uses a (real) set of ritualistic mini-coffins discovered in Edinburgh in the ealy 19th century, and has overtones of body snatching à la Burke and Hare.

Carol Goodman's "The Lake of Dead Languages" (ISBN 10: 0099435594; ISBN 13: 978 0099435594) involves a legend of three sisters who drowned themselves and turned into rock(s).

As for this year's bingo -- these are some of the murder mysteries currently physically stacked up on my TBR that, at least at first glance, don't seem to fit any of the more specific squares:

Michael Jecks - The Boy-Bishop's Glovemaker, The Chapel of Bones, The Butcher of St. Peter's, and The Malice of Unnatural Death (all part of Jecks's "Knights Templar" series, which begins with "The Last Templar")
Ellis Peters - The Felse Investigations series

I love how the DB comes alive with everybody updating their shelves in anticipation of the bingo! I just wish we'd have the ability to comment on those "blogger XYZ added / wants to read / updated ABC books" notations, just like we can comment on posts ...

OK, one to test whether there's a 100-book limitation to these lists:

British Library / Martin Edwards: "Resorting to Murder" (ISBN 9780712357487) -- the second of the six BL / Edwards short story anthologies not to necessarily to fit any of the more specific bingo squares.

Might add the note of "true crime" to In Cold Blood.

Prawn of the Dead by Dakota Cassidy will fit Amateur Sleuth and Murder Most Foul.
