Thanks to everyone who commented on my series post yesterday - as you can see, I settled on the Valdemar series for a couple of reasons. I have a horse and fantasy loving daughter who is 22, and this series seemed like it might appeal to her, and the plot summary really reminded me of the Alanna ser...

The first part of a trilogy (The Heralds of Valdemar) and my first Mercedes Lackey novel and I'm impressed. The story of a young girl being Chosen to be a Herald, how she develops and grows into the role, is engaging, fun and written in an uncomplicated style that makes reading it a pleasure., Well ...

4 starsWhere has this book been all my life? Seriously. I have a paperback copy somewhere in the basement that I never read, which was purchased long, long ago. Since I read almost exclusively in digital now, there was little chance that I would go digging through boxes of books for the paper cop...

Thirteen-year-old Talia is a member of the Holderkin, a puritanical and patriarchal group of people in the country of Valdemar. Although reading is considered an unwomanly activity, Talia loves to read and secretly dreams of becoming a Herald, or at least going to live with them. All she knows about...

and here is the book that started it all. While Ms Lackey had published a number of short stories before this novel, this is the one most people start with. A YA novel that is well worth any adult reading. I have read this book over and over and over it seems. When I am out of fresh new books I mo...

3.5 starsThis was a sweet little young-YA book with a very mature and resourceful heroine. The author used a more "telling" than "showing" narrative than I usually enjoy. Also the omniscient third person narration isn't my favorite. Otherwise, the story is sweet and would be good for younger teens.

I love most of Lackey's Valdemar books. My favorites are the three about Vanyel published after the three books begun with this novel. However, this novel is what started the series and makes a good introduction to Lackey, whose novels often fall into this pattern: unappreciated teen leaves home to ...

An okay fantasy book set primarily in a castle that looks a little like Hogwarts
