It was then that I encountered a fundamental problem: most of the fine art produced over millennia around the world involves philosophical and religious beliefs, and Postmodern scientism denies that art, philosophy, and religion provide knowledge of reality. Relationalism (a concern for how we might get along) replaces the pursuit of meaning in reality and life. Therefore, the intellectual content of fine art is ignored, sociologized, or denied; art and culture are reduced to entertainment, therapy, or propaganda (see: "A Winter Landscape: Reflections on the Theory and Practice of Art History" Art Bulletin, vol. LXVIII, no. 3 (September, 1986), 467-79).My scholarship centers on that cultural reductionism which has indeed led to the current collapse of the liberal and fine arts. Three books have resulted: For the Love of Beauty: Art History and the Moral Foundations of Aesthetic Judgment (Transaction Publishers, 2008); Western Culture at the American Crossroad: Narratives of Science and Reason, (ISI/James Madison Center for American Ideals and Institutions, Princeton University, 2011), and Cultural Renewal: restoring the liberal and fine arts, (Transaction Publishers, 2014). Interest in a global and cosmopolitan defense of culture as the qualitative and non-violent realm of responsible freedom is evidenced by my most recent work (see: 文化:对本体论之品质的追寻, 潘义年("Culture as the Pursuit of a Qualitative Ontology," Arthur Pontynen), Journal of Nanjing University, no. 2, 2014.There is then a growing global awareness of the dangers inherent to scientism and relationalism and their deadly assault upon fine art and culture. Solutions to that lamentable situation are offered in my work.
