This is the most "contemporary" Alice Hoffman title, meaning that its magic comes entirely from good writing and not from any semi-mystical or magical events. The book is a winner, and has aged really well even though AIDS is not the hot button disease it was when this book was published.

1993this is perhaps the least Hoffman book she's written. So much so that five years after reading it the first time (before my hardcore Hoffman fangirling) I bought a copy thinking I'd missed one of hers. I wonder if a book about AIDS in the family feels dated now? At the time it was spot on.
