Atonement was a difficult book for me, to read and rate. There were some points I enjoyed it, but overall the experience was a bit of a let down. The book is told mostly from Briony’s perspective during the period of the Second World War in England. There are also sections a few years on from her ...

There are two competing novels here. One is driven by a character’s flaw and how it brought her to do a terrible thing. The other is a manipulative, Shawsank Redemption-like tale where the author takes a character who has it made and puts a lot of external troubles on it in order to make us sympathi...

Oh my god, what a heartwrenching and BRILLIANT book. I don't even have enough words to say how much I loved this. The writing, the narrative—it was all perfect. And the ending. Dear god, the ending. Easily ranks in the top ten best books I've ever read.

I found it difficult to connect to the characters on an emotional level...too much telling. The story itself remided me strongly of Evelyn Waugh, particularly A Handful of Dust, but without his wit or charm, and the reveal of a completely unreliable narator at the end of the story throws the entiret...
