Family therapist Augustus (Gus) Napier was born in Decatur, GA, in 1938. He was educated at Wesleyan University, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At Wisconsin, he studied with Carl Whitaker, M.D., with whom he wrote The Family Crucible (HarperCollins, 1978). In 1978 he founded The Family Workshop, a treatment and training institute in Atlanta, where he practiced with his wife, family therapist Margaret Napier, and other colleagues. The Fragile Bond (HarperCollins, 1988) describes the couple's work together and their ideas about marriage. Mostly retired from practice, he and Margaret now live in the mountains of western North Carolina. Several years ago Gus re-discovered his early interest in photography and poetry, and he has recently published a new book, Convergence: Photographs and Poems by Augustus Napier. His poems and photographs are juxtaposed to form "units," which he calls "photo/poems," in which each works synchronously with the other.
