Of the various star systems that make up the Confederation, most lie thousands of light-years from First Earth—and out here, no one is free. The agencies that govern the Confederation are as corrupt as the crime bosses who patrol it, and power is held by anyone with enough greed and ruthlessness to claim it. That power is derived from one thing: metatech, the devices that allow people to travel great distances faster than the speed of light.
Jeth Seagrave and his crew of teenage mercenaries have survived in this world by stealing unsecured metatech, and they're damn good at it. Jeth doesn't care about the politics or the law; all he cares about is earning enough money to buy back his parents' ship, Avalon, from his crime-boss employer and getting himself and his sister, Lizzie, the heck out of Dodge. But when Jeth finds himself in possession of information that both the crime bosses and the government are willing to kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he'll go to get the freedom he's wanted for so long.

I saw a definite influence, but I saw the influence of many more modern sci-fi franchises as well, su...
Avalon was actually quite entertaining. While I had trouble getting into it in the first half, the action started picking up towards the end and the ending was quite explosive. I'm typically not a fan of science fiction and like to reserve my sci-fi enjoyments to visual media (television and movies)...
Unlike the TV show Firefly the characters in this book did not have much in the way of "on page" chemistry. While the story itself was fairly action packed the characters were for the most part flat and one dimensional and none of them stood out, not even the main character Jeth.
This was a great book, very character driven with good world building. Follows the story of young Jeth Seagrave and his crew of thieves. After being orphaned at the age of 11(now 17 years old) he has had to turn to a life of crime, and is struggling to make enough money to buy his parents old ship b...
Avalon starts off with a bang - Jeth and his crew of teenage thieves must steal a ship and get it back safely to their crime lord boss, Hammer. Then the action slows, and we learn about the crew, Jeth and Lizzie's past, their parents' deaths, and all about their ship - also their home - the ""Avalon...
