I read this for one of my summer classes. We had to read and annotate 10 comics/graphic novels. Here's the annotation I wrote for that class: Maika Halfwolf is on a quest to discover information about her shadowy past. Along the way she must battle an ancient entity who shares her mind and body an...

I just didn't enjoy it as much as many of my go-tos: any TF written by Roberts or Barber, many of my Marvel titles and some of the DC rebirth titles. That being said, I owned this and read it before volume 2 for the Hugo nominations. I enjoyed this more than I suspected I would because of the h...

This isn't bad. It's an interesting idea. The artwork is wonderful. But the story doesn't fully grab or engage me. I will be reading vol 2 considering I got it the same time, but it isn't a drving narrative.

I don't know that I've ever seen a series as beautiful as this one. Every panel is as intricate and lovely as the cover art. It's astonishing that this is a full monthly title and not a short run comic. Add in the carefully crafted plot, well conceived world-building, and full cast of kick-ass chara...

A teenage girl searching for answers on her mother’s death and the horror that is transforming her mind and body. Once you get into this graphic novel, which might take a little bit, the characters are likeable and some horrible. They make you feel the way you should which terror, fear and a litt...

This is the story of Maika Halfwolf, a seventeen year old orphan that sets out to either save the continent or at least her people. There are a lot of politics involved among the four species, and they are all either vying for power and genocide of the "other" or trying to survive during and after a...

So many people have been talking and raving about Monstress. I've heard so many good things about this comic that I immediately placed an order at my library so I could read it ASAP! ...only to wait for months and still not have them contact me to let me know when the comic will be in... only to fin...

Old Faves in New Flavors The Hobbit Graphic Novel The novel stayed true to the book. However, I wasn't too impressed with the artwork. It could have been more attractive. Given that I've just finished reading Monstress, it is no surprise that everything else looks almost dull in comparison! ...

Beautiful illustrations depict monstrous scenes. This comic drops readers right into the action, in a world torn by a war between humans and the Arcanic, creatures of various folklore, kitsune, vampires, cyclopian creatures and many others, some more human looking than others. Maika Halfwolf is int...

By it's actual description, Monstress takes place in an alternate 1900s. For whatever reason it read to me as a high fantasy, post-apocalyptic fairy tale pulling on Asian folklore. I'll blame the alt-past vs far future on the gorgeously evolved alt-history and fantastical technology. It could eas...
