In a city where someone is murdered almost every day, attorney Michael Abramowitz’s death should be just another statistic. But the slain lawyer’s notoriety—and his taste for illicit midday trysts—make the case front-page news in every local paper except the Star, which crashed and burned before Abramowitz did. A former Star reporter who knows every inch of this town—from historic Fort McHenry to the crumbling projects of Cherry Hill—now unemployed journalist Tess Monaghan also knows the guy the cops like for the killing: cuckolded fiancÉ Darryl “Rock” Paxton. The time is ripe for a career move, so when rowing buddy Rock wants to hire her to do some unorthodox snooping to help clear his name, Tess agrees. But there are lethal secrets hiding in the Charm City shadows. And Tess’ own name could end up on that ever-expanding list of Baltimore dead.

4.0 Baltimore Blues

4.0 Baltimore Blues - Laura Lippman
Tess is a rower, a sport about which I know nothing, so I liked that. I also enjoyed her reporter-background, and her extensive family connections, and the bookstore. A perfectly good set-up for a series.Mostly, though, I just like Lippman's writing.Library copy

4.0 Baltimore Blues: A Tess Monaghan Novel (Tess Monaghan Mysteries)
Given how Lippman draws Tess Monaghan, ex-reporter and private investigator, and especially the loving portrait she renders of Baltimore, it comes as no surprise to read that she was a journalist in that city. The novel has a ring of authenticity about its city and the world of journalism and the la...

2.0 Baltimore Blues: A Tess Monaghan Novel (Tess Monaghan Mysteries)
This is the first book in Laura Lippman's Tess Monagham series. Lippman tries her hand at writing a novel after spending 20 years as a journalist and she is sticking within what she knows with the characters and plot. The first Tess Monagham story is about an out of work journalist with a passion fo...
