This is a book that I would have in my classroom library for students to read in their free time. I would have this in grades K-4. When the student is finished reading the book I would ask them a series of questions to test for comprehension of the book.

I am an ardent Barbara McClintock fan. She's the illustrator I'd want to be if I was an illustrator. Her style just speaks to me on just about every level. I own almost everything her pen has touched. Sadly, our picture book reading days are dwindling as my daughter approaches tweendom. But w...

Another gentle, whimsical, and touching book by an author I love (and respect) very much. The story is simple, but unlike what other reviewers have said I must disagree in that this book WILL find an audience. It will resonate with teenage girls but also with younger girls who may be in the same kin...

Usually I don't check in like that before writing, because I like to write based on my aesthetic response. The best thing I found by reading t...

I loved the illustrations in this poetry book. The Illustrations by Barbara McClintock are charming and the music cd by Natalie Merchant plays in our bookstore all the time! Great choice as a new baby gift.

Charming short kids book that celebrates winter and the ice that forms in deep winter. No specific setting but it didn't surprise me to find the author is from Maine-it just has that New England feel to it. This short book is a great way to introduce kids to think about different kinds of one subjec...

The world this book describes is so alien to me that it might as well be set in Kathmandu. As a life-long Texan I admit that I am not very well acquainted with ice and snow. And the little I do know about it has done little to entice me. I honestly can't imagine living with it day in and day out for...
