Ben Gilliland started the weekly MetroCosm science column, in the UK's Metro Newspaper in 2005. MetroCosm went on to become one of the paper's most popular sections. He was nominated for the 2010 Sir Arthur Clarke Award for Best Space Reporting - which he didn't win. He was nominated for the 2011 Sir Arthur Clarke Award for Achievement in Space Media, but didn't win that one either. Finally, in 2013, he was awarded the Sir Arthur Clarke Award for Space Achievement in Media. Ben Gilliland now writes and doodles for a variety of outlets (including SEN, New Scientist and his own website www.cosmonline.co.uk). He is seeking therapy to address his propensity to talk about himself in the third-person.Here's a round-up of some of the five-star reviews "How to Build a Universe" has garnered (select, copy and paste):http://cosmonline.facultimedia.com/blog/2015/04/19/how-build-universe-review-reviewOther praise for Ben Gilliland:"Ben Gilliland's stuff is brilliant! I love MetroCosm's unique style and how it manages to lay out science's toughest ideas with such unusual clarity. His latest project sounds like it might just be the illustrated guide to the Universe I've been waiting for."Kevin Fong, co-director of Centre for Aviation Space and Extreme Environment Medicine, University College London, presenter of BBC's Horizon science documentaries and author of "Extremes: Life, death and the limits of the Human body" "I always look forward Ben's spreads in the Metro. Lifts the whole morning (and the paper) finding proper, correct science done with fun. When I know the science, he always has it right, when it's new to me, I learn & enjoy."Jonathan Butterworth, Professor of physics and astronomy at University College London, physicist at CERN and author of "Smashing Physics: Inside the World's Biggest Experiment""Ben's weekly Cosm features for the Metro have been a revelation. The sort of physics he concisely explains and illustrates often leaves other professional science communicators stumped for easy-to-understand descriptions. He brings complex physics to the commuting masses in an entertaining fashion." Joe Winters, Senior Press Officer at the Institute of Physics "Ben Gilliland is someone who enjoys tackling complex scientific topics and making them accessible to a wide audience. He does this most prominently through his Cosm column in the Metro newspaper, writing and illustrating articles that are held in high esteem by the astronomical community."Robert Massey, Deputy Executive Secretary at the Royal Astronomical Society"Ben has a real knack for explaining complicated things, such as space, in a really simple and immediate way, bringing out their relevance and sharing the excitement of the latest advances. I often see people absorbed in reading his pieces in Metro on the underground."Jeremy Curtis, Head of Education at the UK Space Agency
