Ben Wright was born in London, England in 1975. Arriving two weeks early, his parents had to cut short their trip to a dog show, where they were taking the family dalmatian 'Domino' for his first outing. Ben and Domino both considered themselves first sons and were enemies ever after. He grew up on the Isle of Grain in Kent - where he rode his BMX illegally on the pavements of St Davids Road and in the communal areas of St Andrews Walk - before moving to a suburb of Norwich at the age of 11. Well, it was in fact New Costessey, if you've heard of it? By this time he had two sisters, too. These were the mid-80's and the days of permed hair, Tupperware parties and white towelling socks worn proudly with black trousers.Following another house move in 1989, Ben undertook his GCSE's and 'A' Levels at Alsager School in Cheshire. He had no idea what either were for or why he did them. But the school was a good one and here Ben made lifelong friends, many of whom he travelled with on the school's German exchange trip to Reinbek, on the outskirts of Hamburg.Ben's marks were accidently good enough to allow him to attend Keele University in Staffordshire, where he earned a degree in American Studies and History. He went to the library there several times, but mostly tidied his room, listened to the Beatles and drank an assortment of teas, alco-pops and Cuarenta y tres.Having no idea what to do next, Ben moved to Manchester and stayed there for the next ten years. Here, he moved flat constantly (but always paid his Council Tax), enjoyed many Rusholme curries and Madchester indie nights and pursued an unfathomable career with an Alt-Net telco. Whatever one of those is.Manchester was never home, however, as his roots were still in Kent. And Ben could never master the accent, as his northern friends constantly remind him. So in 2008 he did the only decent thing a softy southerner in the grim north should do. He quit his job, quit his flat and got on the next train to London.Since then, Ben has lived variously within London, namely Islington, Bishopsgate and now Putney, where he runs / jogs / walks / wheezes / collapses along the Thames Pathway. He has become adept at avoiding the dogs, rowers and cyclists, muddy puddles, occasional vans and fierce wildlife that routinely clogs the route to enable him to complete 10k in about 50 mins. Ish.In 2011 he married a girl far more beautiful, talented and clever than he deserved in a pretty little ceremony at Christs' College Cambridge, and they had the Sticky Wicket swing orchestra play for the guests in the evening. She now plays classical pieces on the piano whilst Ben writes his novels (and plays and shows and reviews...). One day, they would like to move to the country and grow the tomato seeds they brought back from Sorrento. Perhaps they will, one day.
