Dr. Ayyub is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP since 1993, sabbatical leave with the U.S. Navy, 1993-94, 2000-01 and 2007-08); Director of the Center for Technology and Systems Management (UMCP since 1996); Professor of Reliability Engineering (UMCP since 1985); Professor of Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computation (UMCP since 2009); Affiliate Professor of Engineering and Public Policy (UMCP since 2006); Co-Director of the Intelligent Systems Laboratory (UMCP since 2002); Consulting Professor at the U. S. Navy (1993 to 2001); President of BMA Engineering, Inc., board member of several research and development companies and non-profit organizations including start-up companies receiving millions of dollars in venture-capital funding. He completed his PhD degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta in 1983, MSCE degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1981, and BSCE from the University of Kuwait in 1980. His main research interests are risk, uncertainty and decision analysis, and systems engineering applied to civil, infrastructure, energy, defense and maritime fields including reliability-based design and risk-informed planning and decision making covering many aspects of project lifecycles and portfolios, such as life expectancy assessment of structural systems, risk-informed inspection, protection of critical infrastructure, bidding strategies, project execution risk, project life management, operational risk, risk management including risk transfer and risk finance, and liability and exposure analysis. Dr. Ayyub is the recipient of several awards including the ASCE Outstanding Research-Oriented Paper in the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management for 1987, the ASCE Edmund Friedman Award in 1989, the ASCE Walter Huber Research Prize in 1997, the ASNE Jimmie Hamilton Award for the best paper in the Naval Engineers Journal (NEJ) in 1985, 1992, 2000 and 2003 (the only multiple recipient of the award), and the K. S. Fu Award of NAFIPS in 1995. He also received the Department of the Army Commander’s Award for Public Service in 2007 for leading the development of the risk model for the hurricane protection system of New Orleans (this award for Public Service is the fourth highest honor the United States Department of the Army can bestow upon a civilian.) Dr. Ayyub received the 2009 ASME Safety Engineering and Risk Analysis Division (SERAD) “Honorable Recognition Award in testimony of the high regard of your associates and the deep appreciation of the society for your valued service in advancing the engineering profession...” He also received a Certificate of Gratitude for Active, Impartial and Significant Contribution as an International Evaluator, Georgia National Science Foundation, Tiblisi, Georgia in 2010. The Governor of the State of Maryland honored him with a citation for positive contributions, leadership & distinguished service in 2003. He serves on the State of Maryland Governor’s Emergency Management Advisory Council since 2011.He was appointed to many national and investigation boards, and delivered invited talks at leading organizations including most recently distinguished lectures to the Brazilian Research Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, Naval War College for the Chief of Naval Operations, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Australian national Marine Safety Committee. Dr. Ayyub is the author and co-author of more than 600 publications (including 8 textbooks and 14 edited books) in journals, conference proceedings, and reports.
