I could never quite get into this book. Although the premise of the story sounded interesting, the writing simply fell flat for me. There would be moments at which it would seem to pick up and then simply fall flat again. Furthermore, I could never quite attach to any of the characters in the story ...

I'm not much for historicals, unless they have asylums - and this one does. Author Kathy Hepinstall is another tick in Blue Asylum's favour.Convicted of madness or hysteria, plantation owner's wife Iris Dunleavy is sent to Sanibel Asylum, on an island off the coast of mainland USA. Her presence quic...

What a sweetly sad novel. The mentally broken, along with one headstrong protagonist, play on an island stage in this book. Sorrow bound up and set against the backdrop of the Civil War, slavery, oppression, and loneliness make for a compelling read. The writing is beautiful.

If you are looking for a book to read on the beach or just to while away a quiet afternoon, that will draw you in and beckon you back, this is it. Written with a prose that is at once simple and yet profound, as it deftly describes the atmosphere, in the luxury asylum for lunatics where Iris Dunleav...

It seems to me that Kathy Hepinstall weaves a complex Civil War Era story with strands from several characters' lives and does it fairly seamlessly, with an economy of words. It is a short book. Yet the narrative is rich and the landscapes, internal and external, are finely drawn. This book was a su...

Blue Asylum is a story about standing up for yourself, and being punished for it. Iris Dunleavy is a woman who simply wants to speak her mind. The wife of a plantation owner, she finds herself aghast at the treatment of the slaves. In a mad attempt to do something to help, poor Iris finds herself in...
