He served a lengthy apprenticeship, working at writing every day for twenty years before submitting his work for publication. Since then, his stories have appeared in numerous magazines, including Esquire, and received a long list of literary awards and citations, among them The Marjory Bartlett Sanger Award, The Meridian Editors' Prize, and The Barry Hannah Fiction Prize.
