Reading Saints Now! I read American Born Chinese first and loved it so when I saw Boxers & Saints, I knew I had to read them. This comic confirms Yang as a must read author. My library has them in two installments instead of a single volume which is sad because Boxers ends on such a cliff hanger! If...
I have been a fan of Gene Luen Yang since I've read his American Born Chinese graphic novel. I've read quite a lot of his works since then as well. So when I heard he wrote another graphic novel duology, I was more than excited to read it. And I quite like this one. Yang's artwork is still very si...
Admittedly, I know very little about the Boxer Rebellion but I really enjoyed this graphic novel, the story it told, and the way it told its story. I'm very excited to read volume two ("Saints") and see the other side of this story.
I'm not sure if I read about "Boxer Rebellion" in school (which was a long time ago), but after finishing this I think I'll look up some of the "further reading" suggestions. It's interesting to see how they felt about the "foreign Devils" I'm on to the next book which is called "Saints"
Now this was amazing compared to Saints! I made the mistake of reading Saints first thinking it came before Boxers. This was my first time reading something like this and I loved it! The illustrations, dialogue, characters, and I loved how the story just kept building.
I first heard about this book from Michael Kindness on the podcast Books on the Nightstand, that he co-hosts with a colleague, Ann Kingman. Not that I am gaining anything from this, but I would highly recommend downloading the podcast, as they have excellent book recommendations and discuss some re...
I don't read many graphic novels, but there was so much hype about this series that when I saw it on the shelf at my local library I thought I'd give it a go. I am glad I did. I knew nothing about the Boxer Rebellion going into this, so it was a nice light way to introduce me to the historical event...
There are very few authors I will actively seek out, often the subject of the book has far more to do with my wish to read over who wrote it. As with many things, there are exceptions: Jasper Fforde, Laurie R. King (though I don't particularly care for her non-Mary Russell books), and Agatha Christi...
What have we learned? That people who start out fighting for justice aren't necessarily any better at delivering it than the people they fight against. Especially if they haven't actually planned for a time after the war. There are always stories of atrocities committed by the other side, and it's r...
This is a review for both Boxers AND Saints. You will find the same review in both review spaces. I read both of these graphic novels in the same night. I had been told the ending for the first book was pretty brutal (and it was) and that it might affect my enjoyment of the story. It did. So I sta...
