I am a Professor of Sociology at UCLA. My research focuses on population, stratification, and kinship in China, and in comparative and historical perspective. One specific area we have focused on recently is the role played by lineages and other kin groups in creating and sustaining patterns of social and economic inequality. For this research, my collaborators and I constructed and analyze large demographic databases from historical Chinese sources such as population registers and genealogies.
