On a bleak wintry morning some years ago I was summoned to the office of our naval attaché at the American embassy in Kabul.If one can block out the fact that the chase story is completely implausible then there is some very interesting stuff to consider. Interesting, worrying and brutal.

James Michener was such an amazing man. Intrepid adventurer, brilliant scholar, prolific author. We shan't see the likes of him again, more's the pity.
