God's Thumbs! I was fairly certain that I had read this while I was younger, but I was not 100% until I read this phrase. It's a short fun read that I need to put on my list to pass onto my children.
I'm not quite sure how to rate this book ... On one hand, the writing was brilliant, the voice was spot on, and I loved seeing the scrapes that Catherine got into. The setting felt very real to me and it was obvious that Karen Cushman did her research. On the other hand, that time period was very di...
Why I bought this book...A), it was cheap and on sale, and B) because it starts like this:***12TH Day of SeptemberI am commanded to write an account of my days: I am bit by fleas and plagued by family. That is all there is to say.13TH Day of SeptemberMy father must suffer from ale head this day, for...
The first time I read this book was with my ELA class in middle school, but I HATED it SO MUCH. I was excited to read it, too, because I've always been interested in the general time period when it's set and because I love epistolary novels. But I really, really hated it.I went back and reread it re...

Unfortunately for Birdy, I ended up enjoying the later much more and that played...
I fell in love with this book as a child, and decided to revisit it now as an adult who loves medieval historical fiction. I found Catherine to be every bit as enjoyable as I’d remembered. The diary format is both informative and hilarious concerning everyday life in the Middle Ages and also delig...
I can't remember too much about this book except that it was written in the form of a diary and I really enjoyed it. It got some sort of award so obviously someone agreed with me for whatever reasons they might have.
I adore this book--Cushman is brilliant at capturing a historical setting while also giving her reader characters to care about. She navigates the tension between having a protagonist that modern readers can relate to and one who is true to her time period with such skill. I get caught up in this ...
Fun YA novel about Birdy, who is 14 in the year 1290. She's suspiciously spunky and independent-minded for the time, but it's a good read nonetheless. Richly detailed, pretty funny, and finally, a Newbery Honor book that's not terribly sad.
