During the twelve years her mother danced with Alzheimer's disease, Catherine Gentile served as her advocate and acted as her Health Care Power of Attorney. Gentile's professional experience in special education/mental health enabled her to coordinate communications between the facility in which her mother lived and her family. She learned about the disease and the perseverance it takes to live with it. She attended conferences and spoke at length with doctors, nurses, and staff. She met families like hers who were working through the maze of available support services. She struggled with her mother's broken heart and hers. The more Gentile learned about this disease, the more she wanted to publish an ezine. While she had little time when her mother was alive, she now edits "Together With Alzheimer's Ezine", a free family-friendly publication that explores the many facets of this disease. As an award winning author, Gentile loves creating characters and their situations. The characters in her award-winning debut novel, The Quiet Roar of a Hummingbird, tell the story of Abby Windsor, a bright seventeen-year-old senior, struggling through the disruptive aftermath of her own bullying, her beloved grandmother's diagnosis of Alzheimer's, and the unexpected discovery of meaning and hope --outgrowths of the friendship and love to which she is dangerously attracted. Gentile hopes The Quiet Roar of a Hummingbird in tandem with "Together With Alzheimer's Ezine", will promote compassion for those suffering from the injustices of bullying and of Alzheimer's.
