Cecilie Jean Scott was born in San Francisco on April 28, 1937, and died in Portland on January 1, 2013. A graduate of Polytechnic High School in San Francisco in l954, she was in the student movement against racism and the war in Vietnam. Her empathy for the oppressed drew her to the socialist movement. She moved to Seattle and, after the Vietnam War, was a founding member of the Freedom Socialist Party, which she left, becoming co-editor of the short-lived quarterly "Revolutionary Age." During those years she became a mother of two and a step-mother to three. In 1980, she moved to Duvall, Wash. She returned to college, receiving her MA in Whole Systems Design from Antioch University in 1993. She worked as a development editor and supervised a team of more than 40 volunteers for MSN "Survivors Community," moderating discussions among survivors of cancer, abuse, bereavement, chronic illness, divorce and addiction. In 2004 she and her husband moved to Portland, where she did her own creative writing while continuing her employment with Microsoft. She maintained and extended her relationships with several serious writing and critique groups. Members of those groups helped her through the last days. During the last months of her life, which was cut short by cancer, she completed a book of her memoirs, "Knowing Bodies," integrating her travels in Bali and her life with cancer.
