Definitely not the best Star Trek novel, and certainly not up to the standards set by James Blish in his series of adaptations, this was the second "official" Trek original novel. While there were some interesting plot items, it was really just a Spock-less tale with one of the throwaway characters ...

A highly surprising ending makes this book am excellent addition to any library. The idea behind dops is ingenious and a curious future should the idea prove a reality.
