Although the first hundred pages had me evocatively remembering summer '09 (for reasons I can't quite quantify, although I tried to in the big review), the last two-thirds go to something simply good. It's the Midwest, it's the story of a couple and their building of a family - what more could it r...
This is a book full of passion for art and language. As someone who hasn't formally studied literature, The Art of Subtext gave me a wonderful new way to think about my reading and writing. While as far from a how-to guide or writing manual as possible and still be a book on writing, I suspect that t...
Beware on this one! (Emphasis greatly exaggerated). Don’t believe the reviewers on this title—believe Baxter, the author. Many reviewers (and I suspect they are authors or aspiring authors) suggest that their interests in this title is what the title is about—consequently, you’ll see many reviewers ...
Need I write anything at all? Simply look at the authors collected here - the variety and quality is astounding. Tbe best of what the English language had to offer in literary short fiction from 1970 to 1999. Are all the stories life-changing works of art that will stay with you forever? No, but I g...

I like them only if the story completes itself and isn't all about symbolism and themes. A few stories I loved and some I couldn't ...
I dissent. I must not be among the literary cognoscenti mentioned in the blurb about this book. I found it impossible to distinguish one character's voice from the next, even taking the annoying verbal tics into consideration. I found the narrative shallow and the writing merely workmanlike. In fact...
An interesting novel. I decided to read it based on a recommendation from someone in an online book group. They said it was remarkably well written, especially in how he developed his characters. It was pretty good in that sense, but throughout most of the book I found the characters to be less than...
This a delicious novel. Structurally it is a sort of extended spokes on a wheel. The central character is Bradley. We learn of his relationship history, and of people connected with him. A young couple, who outwardly seem very punky are in fact the most traditional. We see his relationship with a ve...
One person's love story leads to another person's love story...
