Christopher Bartley, a pen name, is a clinical psychologist and a Professor of Psychology at the University of Hawaii, Hilo, Hawaii. He also directs research at The Menninger Clinic in Houston, Texas and has an appointment at Baylor College of Medicine. He conducts clinical trials, epidemiology, psychiatric biomarkers, and mental health services research, mostly with prisoners and combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder. He has over 250 scientific publications (h-Index = 49), including a recent paper on military suicides, alcoholism, and psychiatric illnesses among Union Forces during the U.S. Civil War. For his scientific work he has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Scientific American, and Los Angeles Times, among others. He also has written scientific commentaries published in Time, National Review, NY Times, and Huffington Post. As a crime novelist, he has published 7 novels. He has had an interest in American history since hearing a first-hand account of the Battle of San Juan Hill from his great-grandfather as a child, and then later learning about his father's military service during the Vietnam War. He is fascinated with the history of jazz, classic films, gangsters, bank robbers and baseball, which converged in interesting ways during the 1920's, 30's and 40's. Setting his novels shortly after prohibition allows him to delve into one of his favorite periods. His seventh novel in the Ross Duncan series, "EVERY SECRET THING,' has been published recently. He also publishes scholarly books related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychopathology, under his actual name (B. Christopher Frueh).
