CLINTON R. SANDERS is a professor in the sociology department at the University of Connecticut. He has served as President (2002-2003) and Vice-president (1994-1995) of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction. Sanders' work focuses on cultural production, deviant behavior, ethnographic research, and anthrozoology. In addition to numerous articles in professional journals he is author of Understanding Dogs: Living and Working with Canine Companions (Temple University Press, 1999) and co-author (with Arnold Arluke) of Regarding Animals (Temple University Press, 1996) both of which received the SSSI's Charles Horton Cooley Award. In 2004 he was the recipient of the University of Connecticut Provost's Award for research excellence. His latest books are Between the Species (Allyn and Bacon, 2009) edited with Arnold Arluke and the revised and updated edition of his classic ethnography of the social world of tattooing, Customizing the Body (Temple University Press, 2008). Sanders was the 2006 recipient of the American Sociological Association Animals and Society Section's Distinguished Scholarship Award. In 2011 Sanders was given the George Herbert Mead award for career achievements by the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction.
