Clyde Chitty is currently visiting Professor at the University of London Institute of Education and was, until recently, Goldsmiths Professor of Policy and Management in Education at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He was Head of the Department of Educational Studies at Goldsmiths from 1998 to 2001, and from 2002 to 2006. Prior to joining the Department in January 1998, he was Reader in the Modern History of Education at the University of BirminghamHis teaching career began in London in 1966 where he taught English and history in a number of comprehensive schools for over a decade before moving to Leicestershire in 1977 to become Senior Vice Principal, and later Principal, of the newly-established Earl Shilton Community College, a pioneering community school which attracted visitors from all over the world. He is the author, co-author or editor of over thirty books and reports on education, including Thirty Years On, a large-scale study of the British comprehensive school, co-authored with the late Caroline Benn. His most recent books include: Education Policy in Britain and Eugenics, ‘Race’ and Intelligence in Education. He is Editor of the campaigning education journal Forum: for promoting 3-19 comprehensive education.
