The elites of our time discovered immortality - and kept it for themselves. Over the millennia, they bent nanotechnology and quantum physics to their will, becoming gods. Their power is undeniable, belief is mandatory. In a distant future, one in which humanity has spread itself out across the galaxy, the lesser gods war among themselves ceaselessly while the high gods glare down at them.

One small, tiny region of the galaxy is free from the tyranny of belief, the realm of the nonbelievers, called the Human Nations. The gods always and ever seek its destruction.

Between the two, the gods have allowed to spring up wildspace, the borderland between the gods and the nonbelievers. No one knows why they have permitted this - fear of the Human Nations, or perhaps a deeper mystery? The Hana, the premiere mercenaries of the gods, are sent into wildspace, to the world of Oroun, on the search for an ancient artifact. They seek the mangled corpse of a Great Old One, one of the original opponents of the gods.

Unknown to them, a mercenary group has been hired by the Immortal Areniis to find the mummified corpse for him. Their leader, Touma, is certain of one thing, the Immortal will betray them at some point. Are he and his friends quick enough, smart enough to avoid the Immortal's trap?

Between these two and their prize are the people of Urbesh, living behind the Wall, trying to preserve themselves in a very hostile world. The Wall was made by the dead god Daniui before he disappeared. It has protected the people of Urbesh for many years from violent desert raiders. They have recently been unified by the Bandit Queen. Think of any evil thing and she has done it. She wishes to devour Urbesh for her own pleasure.

When the Immortal, his mercenaries, the Bandit Queen, the Urbeshi, and the Hana meet along the dry dunes, one thing is certain: there will be violence.
