Well this series definitely intrigues me. I ended up reading a short story starring this character last year or the year before for Festive Tasks and then I ended up trying to start a stand alone with him and didn't realize it wasn't the first book. So I put it away and forget about reading this ser...
“The cultured cop! I thought they were peculiar to detective novels.”In “Cover Her Face” by P. D. JamesSometimes people just like to talk about the books they're reading. Not boast. Just talk. I realise such plebeian behaviour may not be acceptable in the rarefied circles some people move in, but fo...
Scribd comes through. I went through a period of my life maybe fifteen years ago where all I read were mysteries, mostly mysteries written by women. P.D. James, Elizabeth George, Martha Grimes figured prominently during this reading era. All three of them featured male detectives - real detectives...

Interesting story of a family who are waiting for a father to die, trying to find their place in the world and be a part of a society that's changing before their eyes. Full of stock characters from and English Country village, this is the story of an unmarried mother who is killed shortly after an...
The thinking person's mystery. I did enjoy it, it was really well written. Unlike other mysteries I have read, I think the reader might be able to actually figure out by the clues, "whodunnit." Before reading P.D. James, I thought there was no point in trying to figure out who was guilty, or bother ...
I tore through the beginning of this book, and would have continued to finish it in no time had the Olympics not intervened and drawn my attention. It was a very good "locked room" mystery. It was well-written and quick-moving, with little unneeded embellishment or back-story. Sometimes it's refres...
A nicely constructed English country estate murder in which everyone has secrets and nobody is particularly nice. I appreciated the fact that the author spent almost the first quarter of the book setting up the suspects' motives in advance of the murder rather than starting after the murder with th...
Slow and steady. That's how DCI Dalgliesh conducts his investigations. Logical too. The plot is a smudge too clinical and rational for my tastes but still it's quite the portrait of a certain class of people at a precise time. Worth reading.
