In Crank, Ellen Hopkins chronicles the turbulent and often disturbing relationship between Kristina, a character based on her own daughter, and the "monster," the highly addictive drug crystal meth, or "crank." Kristina is introduced to the drug while visiting her largely absent and ne'er-do-well father. While under the influence of the monster, Kristina discovers her sexy alter-ego, Bree: "there is no perfect daughter, / no gifted high school junior, / no Kristina Georgia Snow. / There is only Bree." Bree will do all the things good girl Kristina won't, including attracting the attention of dangerous boys who can provide her with a steady flow of crank.

I remember when I was younger that quite a few people around me read this book though I never bothered to try. I finally the other day opened it up and was entranced by the poetic ...
Quick review for a very quick read, in part because this was a novel that was written entirely in verse form. "Crank" is Ellen Hopkins's first novel. I'm reading this *years* after the fact, and I'll admit it had my attention and sentiments for much of the read. I would highly recommend listening to...
Crank isn’t the first novel by Ellen Hopkins that I’ve read so I was already aware of her poetic free verse way of writing. I actually really enjoyed the other two or three books that I’ve read by her, but I didn’t enjoy this one as much. I think I would’ve preferred to have a read this book in a mo...
Crank is a novel written in verse, so it is an extremely quick read despite its 537 pages. I ended up picking it up for my eReader when it was on sale, and while I enjoyed it, I think it's a hard book to review in a lot of ways. There were some pretty horrifying and sad scenes, and Kristina could al...
