What is the value in alternate history? For most writers, alternate history provides an opportunity to play “what if?” games with the past, to imagine how much different the world would be had events turned out differently. For others, it serves as a sort of literary funhouse mirror that can be used...
I am a late adaptor in terms of Sittenfeld’s work. I read her novels Sisterland and Eligible before this short story collection, but missed Prep and others before that. There is a certain upper middle class world that Sittenfeld captures so perfectly, but it is their cringe-worthy behavior that is m...
In this modern-day retelling of Pride and Prejudice, the way people know that Chip Bingley, an ER doctor "in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife” is that two years before, he appeared on a Bacheloresque dating show called Eligible (without selecting either of the two female cont...
Eligible is described as a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice and that is exactly what it is. I picked it up on Audible for my ride to work and hoped for the best. It did not disappoint. I really liked it and the narrator was perfect for the story. The characters were all perfect and I have t...
This is a retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but honestly, if that sounds intimidating to you, or too high-school-reading-assignment-ish, I will say that it is a fun, well-written book. I am a fan of Jane Austen, but I would suggest that if you have not read any of her books, that shoul...
Mr Bennet has had a heart attack so Lizzy and her elder sister Jane return to the family home in Cincinnati. There she finds her younger sisters caught up in a Crossfit health craze, but doing little to provide for themselves. Her middle sister Mary is doing yet another degree, and again failing to ...
A modern telling of Pride and Prejudice. Very tongue-in-cheek. I laughed a lot as the story went on. I liked how she brought in so much of today's pop culture. Well done and it stays true to the original. I would read this and Ms. Sittenfeld again. So much fun!
