Dan G. Cox is an associate professor of political science for the US Army, Command and General Staff College, School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS). Dr. Cox previously taught at Missouri Western State University and the University of Nebraska-Kearney. He has been with SAMS for two years and enjoys teaching a diverse group of Majors, Lieutenant Colonels and Colonels from the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines as well as officers from US allied forces from around the world. SAMS is a unique graduate school in the US Army educational system often referred to as the elite school for the Army. Of the over twelve hundred Majors who attend the US Army's mandatory ILE education course, less than ten percent are selected to attend SAMS one year graduate course. Students who complete the course are bestowed a Master's of Military Arts and Sciences degree. Following successes in the field, beginning with Operation Desert Storm in which several notable SAMS graduates were credited with helping to formulate the successful operation, graduates of SAMS have often been referred to as Jedi Knights. These field grade officers often go on to excel in planning and strategy positions throughout the US Army. Dr. Cox's current research interests include terrorism/counterterrorism, counterinsurgency (COIN), causes of insurgency, culture and conflict, and interagency cooperation. He has a forthcoming article in Joint Forces Quarterly, entitled "The Struggle Against Global Insurgency?" and he is currently working on research on counterinsurgency as well as several research projects on the Human Terrain and conflict mitigation.
