The first thing Daniel ever carves out of wood is a duck, and he's so proud of it he enters it in the spring fair. Henry Pettigrew, the best wood-carver in the valley, might admire it. But when the duck is on display, Daniel sees the other settlers laughing at it. Hurt, Daniel tries to throw his duck into the river, but someone stops him - it's Henry Pettigrew.
