Daniel C Schechter has been contributing to Lonely Planet travel guides since 1999, when he covered a broad swath of northern Mexico for the popular guidebook publisher. Since then, he has updated, rewritten and contributed material to sections of a dozen Lonely Planet titles, including Venezuela, Spain, Yucatán, Pacific Northwest and Mexico City. Most recently, Daniel toured the Spanish provinces of Sevilla, Córdoba and Huelva to gather material for the seventh edition of the Lonely Planet Andalucía guide. Although he hails from Brooklyn, Mexico was Daniel's home base for nearly a decade. It was there that he began his writing career, initially working as an editor at The News, Mexico City's English-language daily (until he was dismissed for running a story on the front page about discrimination against gays in Guadalajara, a taboo topic at the conservative paper). He later joined the editorial staff of Business Mexico, the American Chamber's monthly magazine, where he contributed articles on travel, food and the environment. Writing an article on guidebooks to Mexico, he made the acquaintance of some Lonely Planet authors who recommended he work for the publisher. Concurrently, he began translating texts for various Mexican publications as well as for several museums. In 2011, he translated most of the text for the permanent exhibit at the Museo de Tlatelolco in Mexico City. He has recently translated a book on the life of author William S Burroughs in Mexico, The Stray Bullet. Daniel currently resides in Amsterdam, and has written on his adopted city for Time Out Amsterdam and the London City Airports website. He also writes a blog on cycling in the Netherlands.

Rating = 3.5 starsThis is grim and gritty stuff, most suitable for those who are familiar with the key figures who represented the Beat Generation. Sex, drugs, corruption, and self-destruction defined life for William Burroughs in Mexico City. And yeah, writing. There was some of that. Very bizarre ...

Waffling between 2.5 and 3, but a magnificent cover.I have never read any Burroughs and based on this weird biographical sketch I suspect I never will. Seemingly fueled by any drug he could get, often in a stupor, with little sense of responsibility, I would have crossed the street to avoid walking...
