'What is it? What does it want? Why is it angry with me?' January 1937. Clouds of war are gathering over a fogbound London. Twenty-eight year old Jack is poor, lonely and desperate to change his life. So when he's offered the chance to be the wireless operator on an Arctic expedition, he jumps at it. Spirits are high as the ship leaves Norway: five men and eight huskies, crossing the Barents Sea by the light of the midnight sun. At last they reach the remote, uninhabited bay where they will camp for the next year. Gruhuken. But the Arctic summer is brief. As night returns to claim the land, Jack feels a creeping unease. One by one, his companions are forced to leave. He faces a stark choice. Stay or go. Soon he will see the last of the sun, as the polar night engulfs the camp in months of darkness. Soon he will reach the point of no return - when the sea will freeze, making escape impossible. And Gruhuken is not uninhabited. Jack is not alone. Something walks there in the dark.

4.0 Dark Matter ★★★★☆
Although technically a ghost story, the real horror for me is the sense of creeping dread and isolation and loneliness as the last man left in the endless night of an arctic camp. Most chilling of all is the man’s horror at contemplating the afterlife should he perish there and become a ghost himsel...

In one of my periodicals, there´s a paper by someone who´s worked out what we know of the universe is only a tiny percentage of what actually exists. He say´s what´s left can´t be seen or detected, but it´s there; he calls it "dark matter". Would I have read this book before Paver´s other novel Th...

3.5 Dark Matter: A Ghost Story by Michelle Paver - My Thoughts
This book is pretty much outside my comfort zone. Atmospheric ghost stories aren't something I'm drawn to and the only reason I read this one was because a good friend said it was one of the best books she'd ever read. I will admit that it is a well-written book and it catches you from the get-go, ...

4.5 Ghost of "Gruhuken" - 4.5 stars....
I am immensely fascinated with the Artic so anytime I find a book set in the area, I snap them up. I also love a good ghost story so if you combine the two I'm in heaven! And that's exactly what you'll find in Dark Matter so I knew going into it, that it just had to be good. In 1937, a 28 year ol...

4.5 Dark Matter
I came across Dark Matter on a random Amazon wandering, and I was immediately attracted to both the cover, and the synopsis. A ghost story, set in the Arctic during Polar Night in the 1930's ticks so many of my boxes it's uncanny. And what scarier setting than being alone, in the dark, in the ice an...
