Another fun one in this series. I'm finding that the more I read these books, the more I feel that they work best as supplements after having already read some on the topic. I don't recommend them as stand-alones because the information isn't presented in the most concise way. I think of these mor...

Despite my niece's adoration of all things Chinese, I don't think that she adored this book. It seemed that it was more of a challenge for her to understand than some of the other books that we've read from this series--there were ideas and concepts that were difficult for her to comprehend, and th...

Gosh, this was disjointed. I found this so difficult to read and to follow! For instance, on one page a nice discussion of the Easter Island heads was presented, but on the facing page there was a discussion of the Tunguska Incident, the Nazca lines, and I don't recall--something else. Nothing on...

It is a real challenge for me to review this book. It is just right for my 8 year old niece. The content is there, it's presented in a great, factual, yet fun way, the illustrations are interesting to her, and they entertain her, the diverse subject matter of the books in this series excites her (...

You Wouldn't Want to Be a Roman Gladiator is not for kids younger than 2nd or 3rd grade, I think, but it's a very informative and engrossing way to teach history to kids in the appropriate age bracket. The book does not shy away from telling readers exactly what gladiators did, and what they experi...

It's no secret that my daughter and I absolutely adore this series and this one is no exception. She actually declared this her favorite of all the 'You Wouldn't Want to' titles. As always, I have to caution that these are not for the faint of heart. All of the titles are incredibly gruesome, but...

This is another solid offering from one of my favorite non-fiction/history picture book series. Here we learn about how a pyramid was built and what life was like for the various workers - scribes, artists, masons, but mostly the poor farmers who were conscripted into service each year after the Ni...

So maybe this book is right. I wouldn't want to be a gangster 80 years ago doing the same tired old extortion and protection rackets. But it certainly hasn't deterred me from seeking a life of crime. I'll just do it better than those old creeps. Technology's on my side - think of how easy it will be...

Readers are invited to imagine themselves as the fictional George Robert Tweleves Hewes, a middle-aged Bostonian. The chapters follow George as he becomes an active participant in the Boston Tea Party. Each 2 page explains a single event that led otherwise law abiding citizens to rise up against the...

A little too much information for a six-year-old, but she loved the highlights of murder and mayhem and bloodthirst. Sadly, just not as much of those bits as you might hope for in a book with Pirate in the subtitle.
