I just love Deborah Coates's spare, Spartan writing style. It is so evocative of the place that I can feel the South Dakota wind as I read. I was a bit dissapointed in the showdown, which fizzled rather then banged, but everything else- top notch.
Two short stories by Deborah Coates, who is quickly moving up the line of my favorite authors. Though the second story feels more like the beginning of a longer novel then it does a complete short story.
Simple evocative language with just a hint of magic. This is Coates at her best. And this is a complete short story, not just an introduction to a longer novel. I would like to see more from these characters, but the story is complete.

It took a long time to get into this book. I wanted to give up because I just didn't get it. It wasn't what I expected at all. I got to the end though and there were parts that I really enjoyed but overall it was just ok
