DELORES M. WALTERS is a cultural anthropologist with a nursing background. She directs the Southern Rhode Island Area Health Education Center in the College of Nursing at the University of Rhode Island. The Center aims to alleviate health disparities in the Ocean State and support training to increase diversity and cultural competency. Walters began researching the story of Margaret Garner while directing a family/local history-training program at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and teaching at Northern Kentucky University. As a member of the Margaret Garner Steering Committee, she introduced the historical Margaret Garner to both traditional and non-traditional opera-goers in various cities where the opera was performed. Further info about Walters’ advocacy for empowering marginalized communities both globally and locally, to which the Garner story speaks, can be found on her website: www.deloresmwalters.com.
