Cartoonist and writer Denis Kitchen, a member of the 1960s/70s "underground comix" movement, founded Kitchen Sink Press (1969-99), a pioneering house that published early and new graphic works by R. Crumb, Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Al Capp, Scott McCloud, Alan Moore, Art Spiegelman, Charles Burns, Mark Schultz, Dave McKean, Neil Gaiman, Howard Cruse and countless others. In 1986 Kitchen founded and for 18 years chaired the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to First Amendment Rights in the comics industry.Kitchen co-authored three books: THE ART of HARVEY KURTZMAN (Abrams, 2009) with Paul Buhle; UNDERGROUND CLASSICS (Abrams, 2009) with James Danky; and a biography, AL CAPP: A Life to the Contrary (Bloomsbury, 2013) with Michael Schumacher. In addition, Kitchen has written dozens of essays, introductions and annotations for books with numerous publishers including Abrams, W. W. Norton, Dark Horse, DC Comics, NBM. IDW, Kitchen Sink Press, and Kitchen Sink Books.As a cartoonist he has contributed to many books and anthologies, most recently Blabworld Volume 2 (Last Gasp) and Masterful Marks: Cartoonists Who Changed the World (Simon & Schuster, 2014). He curates exhibits of comic art for both American and international institutions. Kitchen received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 from the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters.A monograph of his own work, THE ODDLY COMPELLING ART of DENIS KITCHEN, was published in 2010, and a year later DENIS KITCHEN's CHIPBOARD SKETCHBOOK (DKP/Boomtown). In 2013 he revived Kitchen Sink Books as an independent imprint of Dark Horse Books with partner John Lind.

I would highly recommend this overview of the underground comix/alternative press phenomena of the sixties, seventies and eighties. It covers all the major topics, creators and comix of the era, with loads of reprinted artwork. Mind you, this is probably not one for the kids unless you are VERY open...
