A great human desire driven gothic novel about a family. Vine (Rendell) has the ability to make the reader even feel sorry for the murderer. This is an incredibly well done book.
My first Barbara Vine book, though I've read lots of Ruth Rendell (Vine is a pen name). I like the way the story unfolds. Though not a mystery per se, it kept my interest while I tried to figure out not whodunit, but why-she-did-it.
I can't remember if I read the book first, or watched the film first, and the two are now inseparable in my mind.
